Ajax Data Logger

‘Ajax Controller’ is Coalescences in house solution for data logging, telemetry and control of a Greenpower car’s systems. It was designed by Ben Hepple over a period of 6 months and has been further raced and developed over the 2021 season.

Why is Ajax needed?

In a Greenpower race you have a set capacity at your disposal, 2 car batteries (36 Amp Hours). Throughout a race there are vastly varying demands put on the batteries for example the process of acceleration or going up hills will increase the current demand. If power demand is not monitored vast amounts of energy could be spent very inefficiently and thus shortening the effective capacity of the batteries.

The current iteration of Ajax cannot directly drive a motor, instead, it can be connected to any off the shelf motor controller such as the 4QD porter range and will feed it with its own calculated throttle value. This allows the team to have unlimited ‘modes’ that can be selected by the driver depending on how the car is performing.

Also, it is just as important to know how your car is performing so you can make meaningful conclusions about any upgrades you may have added since the previous race or season. Ajax has logged well over 700+ miles worth of data which accumulates to millions of data points, all of which has contributed heavily to the rapid increase in performance of Icarus.
